In the past I have discussed mobile phones and the importance of social networking to the future of traditional news media. Recently, Nokia announced that it would launch a mobile newspaper in India. This will give individuals the ability to access news anywhere at anytime. My feeling is that cell phones have the potential, especially since the recent introduction of Apple’s iPhone, to become the most important link in the news chain. Cell phones are ubiquitous and we need to consider how we can reach that audience with the rich multimedia content and great stories that we produce.

Nokia and Malayalam Manorama, India’s south-based publication group have teamed up to launch a ‘mobile newspaper’ on all of its GPRS-enabled handsets. Users with Nokia GPRS-enabled handsets in Kerala will be able to access national and international news through the service. Sports, travel, music, astrology, and movies are some of the news categories that will be accessible through the vernacular news portal. -more
